Most travelers choose the motorway, because it is smooth, has few stops and gets you to Islamabad faster. However, the GT Road suits you if you want to save on the fare or stop in towns along the way. The road passes Gujranwala, Gujrat and Jhelum, and some guests add a visit to Rohtas Fort near Jhelum. Since traffic and town crossings slow the GT Road, plan for at least six hours.
An early start makes the journey easier, so many guests leave Lahore at six or seven in the morning. After about two hours, the driver stops at a service area such as Bhera or Kallar Kahar, where you can have tea, pray and stretch your legs. Then the road crosses the Salt Range, and you reach Islamabad around midday. If you prefer a different plan, tell us, and we adjust the stops.
From November to February, dense fog can reduce visibility on the motorway, and the authorities sometimes close sections for a few hours. So, if you travel in winter, start after sunrise and check the Motorway Police updates before you leave. Also, tell us your travel date early, because we can suggest the safest time to depart. In summer, the car is air conditioned, so the long drive stays comfortable.
